J.J. hatte wohl einen Hang zum Exentrischen (zumindest als Sängerin), trank gerne mal einen Schluck S.C. und startete 1966 erste Aufnahmen mit Big Brother & The Holding Company. Zuerst sang sie nicht alle Nummern; auch die beiden Gitarristen (Andrew und Gurley) übernahmen einige Gesangsparts auf dem 1967 erschienenen Debüt. Ihr gemeinsames zweites Album "Cheap Thrills" wurde im August 1968 veröffentlicht und noch im selben Jahr ein Welterfolg. Die Musik (vorrangig Cover-Songs) kommt aus dem Rhythm & Blues, hat Garage- und Soul-Einflüsse - psychedelische Westcoast-Hippie-Musik.
