New and forgotten ways of making radio from Europe and Beyond. Why Don't You Go Home? and IT-Solaris.

Commissions

Radia is a network of independent radio stations who have a common interest in promoting and producing artworks for the radio, and in forming related projects based on broadcasting and cultural exchange.

Why Don't You Go Home?

by Cathryn Morgan Richards from Soundart Radio, Dartington. Donald Crowhurst set sail from Teignmouth, South Devon UK, in the autumn of 1968 on a non-stop round-the-world sailing race in his trimaran ‘Teignmouth Electron’. One of nine competitors, Crowhurst saw his initial high hopes for fame and glory dashed when lack of time, a poorly equipped boat and inexperience all conspired against him. With the realisation that neither he nor the boat were up to the trip came desperation, which led to a faked voyage, a breakdown and ultimately his death.

“Why don’t you go home?” by sound artist Cathryn Morgan-Richards tells the Crowhurst story in the form of a radio documentary, through the accounts of people local to Teignmouth who were in some way witness to what happened. With a backdrop of soundscapes taken from the Teign Estuary, the piece combines spoken voices with an underlying musicality, blurring the boundary between documentary and sonic art.

IT-Solaris

by Johannes Krause and Claus Stoermer for Radio Corax in Halle.

Solaris is a mixture of pictures. The pictures came from the film by Andrej Tarkowskij and is based on the story by Stanislaw Lem - Johannes Krause and Claus Stoermer were inspired by the splattering memories of that doing the piece we can hear in the next half an hour. It's partly German- don't mind. It's partly spoken- don't mind. It's partly voiced by Ralf Wendt- don't mind. It's the other world in less than 30 minutes.

All the material is based on the recorded voice.

Have fun with the raw German language.

Radia produces a weekly radio show that is broadcast by each of the member radio stations. Our shows represent the local artistic community of each station, whilst at the same time these new works point to an emergent collective notion of self-determined art for radio.
