Criminal Macabre
Horror business is rough work. Often it takes copious amounts of alcohol, a lung-blackening amount of cigarettes, a piss-poor attitude, and drugs. Loads of drugs. So many drugs that pharmaceutical companies call you when their supplies run low.
As least that is what one of my favorite paranormal investigators, Cal McDonald of Steve Niles’ Criminal Macabre, has taught me. I have learned very little about detective work from these books other than let your undead-ghoul partner do most of the heavy thinking and leg work while you just make sure you’re pickled enough to pull the trigger and reload. The Criminal Macabre books and comics delve deeper than just mysteries and Hammer/Romero monsters, they examine the levels of punishment one man can self-inflict.
Since childhood McDonald has been able to see the creatures that make bumps in the night. These shadows of folklore and myth, all too real for him, have dogged and prodded him into a forced retirement from the police force and into a self deprecating chemical haze of vengeance and anger. McDonald is brash, vulgar, and more likely to vomit on you than comment on a job well done. The living so hate him that his only friend is an unstoppable ghoul named Mo’Lock. I appreciate Niles’ writing, in that all monsters, with only the exception of peaceful ghouls, are on his hit list. There are no sparkling vampires, no romantic entanglements with the undead, and no ‘teams’. It is Cal versus everyone.
This month, Bibliodiscoteque gives you a soundtrack for Criminal Macabre featuring cannibals, the undead, the insane, specters, drugs, and weapons. Enjoy.
