Berlin 80s Subculture
WiseUpRadio is focusing today on Berlin Subculture of the 1980s. This was an evening in Berlin with rare videos of underground concerts in West-Berlin Horst Weidenmüller, now head of !K7 Records, was filming in the 80s featuring bands like Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria or Nick Cave. These videos capture the nervous energy of Berlin's subculture of the 1980s. Wiseup sat down for an interview with Weidenmüller and Mark Reeder who edited the material and organized the screening. This is accompanied with music of the artists featured in the footage.
In academia there is a debate going on for the last 20 years if subcultures are still existing the way we knew and understood them or if other terms and definitions would be more appropriate. This was due to the emerging electronic music and club culture which was closely tied to the process of digitization and the changes it brought about. Although todays issue is not following any academic approaches, it might give us some hints towards changes that happened and what this means for music.’

Im Besonderen sollen Künstler und Akteure einen Zugang zur Öffentlichkeit bekommen, die sonst in den kommerziellen Medien nicht oder kaum stattfinden und die nach Meinung der Redaktion mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient hätten. Popkultur ist nicht statisch, sondern streitbar. In der Dokumentation und Berichterstattung über Musikkultur liegt ein beachtliches Potential, das die Geschichte von Pop und Gesellschaft selbst mitkonstruiert. Entwicklungen aufzuzeigen und zu hinterfragen ist für "die Sache selbst" wichtig. Interviews sind daher oft das Kernstück der Radiosendungen. Die sichtbaren und unsichtbaren ProtagonistInnen der Popkultur müssen ran, sollen sprechen - durch Worte und Musik. WiseUp favorisiert ein Verhältnis von 50% Wort zu 50% Musik. Neue Tonträger sind ein weiterer Grundpfeiler. Manchmal wird auch einfach nur das reichlich vorhandene Audiopotenzial der Plattensammlung zelebriert.
